BJR publish special feature on nasopharyngeal carcinoma

 

Review and research advances in rare throat cancer

 

The October issue of BJR includes a special feature on nasopharyngeal carcinoma, “West meets East” with guest editors from Singapore, China and France.

This special feature brings together an insightful collection of review and original research articles that narrate and report on clinical and translational research advances in nasopharyngeal carcinoma from both the Eastern and Western regions of the world, guest edited by Dr Melvin Chua (National Cancer Centre, Singapore), Professor Ying Sun Yat-sen (University Cancer Center, State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China and the Collaborative Innovation Center for Cancer Medicine, Guangdong Key Laboratory of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Diagnosis and Therapy, Guangzhou, China) and Dr Stephane Supiot  (Institut de Cancérologie de l'Ouest, Nantes, St-Herblain, France, and also at the University of Nantes, France).

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a distinct malignancy from other epithelial head and neck cancers. The endemic variant is invariably associated with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and typically presents as an undifferentiated histologic subtype. EBV-associated NPC has a specific geographical and demographic distribution, with a predisposition for Eastern and Southeastern Asia, and Northern and Eastern Africa, and is more common in males than females (3:1 ratio).

 

However, treatment concepts are similar, regardless of origin and this special feature brings together clinical and translational research from both east and west. It also includes a range of perspectives from BJR’s multidisciplinary community, from the diagnostic aspects to the radiotherapy treatment, including biology and imaging.

 

While substantial progress has been made in the understanding and treatment of this rare disease, much more work across the different domains of research is needed to continuously advance the care of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients. This fascinating collection of articles is essential reading for anyone with an interest in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and the advances and challenges that are facing the field.
